YO MAMA, 2009

YO MAMA, 2009

Crochet yarn and shoelaces, rope, hardware and knit contributions. Installed for the exhibition “YO MAMA: Sheila Pepe and Friends,” Naomi Arin Contemporary Art, Los Vegas, NV.

Using a Sol Lewitt like set of count-stich instructions, men and women from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas knitted individual pieces that recorded their matriarchal lineage. These abstract chains of shapes were embedded into the outer layers of Yo Mama.

In addition, Pepe selected a group of paintings and sculpture to accompany her own small works. These were mounted in the adjacent space, signifying an array of “Mamas.” Artists: Hannah Barrett, Amy Longenecker-Brown, Fritz Buehner, Angela Dufresne, Vera Iliatova, Frank Lind, Carrie Moyer, (and Pepe).
